Finance Ministry has notified all government offices to cut down all the expenses except giving salary to employees. In a circular sent to all government offices on Thursday by Finance Ministry, it was stated that no expenditure should be made apart from paying salary to employees without getting approval in written form from Finance Ministry. Finance Ministry sent a similar circular to all government offices last year as well.
In October 2014, Finance Ministry stated their decision to reduce government budget because of the lower revenue. With regard to this decision, a circular was publicized by Finance Ministry saying that because government income is less than projected amount, government has decided to reduce expenses in order to reduce budget deficit for the end of the year.
Parliament approved a budget of MVR 15.2 billion for the year 2014.
