Swire: Mohamed Nasheed’s access to medical treatment in the UK is a positive step for democracy

Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and MP for East Devon, Hugo Swire has tweeted tonight saying that he is pleased that the former President Mohamed Nasheed has been allowed access to medical treatment in the UK and is a positive step for rule of law, HR and democracy in the Maldives. Hugo Swire left the Maldives sometime yesterday after completing his official visit. He met with President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom, former President and President of the ruling party PPM, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon and the leaders of PPM, MDP and other political parties in the country. The President’s Office said that “both sides expressed their commitment to further strengthening existing bilateral ties between the Maldives and the UK” at Swire’s meeting with President Yamin along with discussions on “exploring further areas of cooperation between the two countries.”
