Pro-government activists have visited Fushidhiggaru Falhu on Monday and are reporting conflicting narratives to opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) lawmakers who visited the site on Sunday, citing delays in receiving updates regarding the reclamation of the lagoon under Rasmale’ project.
Several MDP lawmakers visited Fushidhiggaru on Sunday to assess the progress of the project and briefed the media on their findings.
In this regard, MDP, which has opposed the project since the onset, said the project is unlikely to reach completion at the current pace even within two terms of the incumbent administration.
In response, pro-government activists visited the site on Monday, even sharing videos on social media to showcase the progress of the project.
In this regard, Mariyam Malsha who holds a senior post in Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the company undertaking the project’s engineering-related works, said 129 hectares out of 1,009 hectares of land has been reclaimed so far. According to Malsha, this accounts for the size of Hulhumale’ Phase I.
Good morning from Rasmalè There’s been some false information circulating that work at Rasmalè has stopped which is completely untrue. To clear the doubts, we came here ourselves to see the progress.???? Here’s the update:•So far, 129 hectares of land have already been… pic.twitter.com/VclboDAJ51

In contrast to MDP lawmakers, the pro-government activists who visited the scene reported that the project was progressing at a fast pace. They have described the current progress of the project as a huge feat, adding that reclamation is proceeding without any delays.
The government has yet to disclose updates on the project in an official capacity.
Physical works on the reclamation of K. Fushidhiggaru Falhu under the Rasmale’ project began on December 18th, 2023, with an eight-month completion timeframe.
The project was first contracted to Sri Lanka's Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC), but this contract was later terminated by the government, which aimed to proceed without allocating land to the contractor. Consequently, the reclamation work has experienced intermittent halts for various reasons.
The government plans to issue 11,000 land plots and over 26,000 housing units from Rasmale’, which is being developed as an eco-city.
