Housing Ministry amends flat eligibility rules for persons with disabilities

The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has amended the eligibility requirements for individuals with disabilities applying for flats under the government’s housing programme.
According to the ministry, the amendments have been introduced to the regulations governing the distribution of flats for Malé residents.
Under the revised rules, applicants in this category must have a disability recognised under the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Provision of Financial Assistance Act (Act No. 8/2010), commonly known as the Disability Act.
The ministry has also removed the residency duration requirements previously applied to this flat category. These included the condition that Malé residents must have lived in the capital for at least one year and that residents from other islands must have lived in Malé continuously for 15 years.
The new amendments state that if persons with disabilities or their families are unable to live in the Greater Malé area due to financial constraints, and if treatment for their condition is not available in their home island or atoll, they must have sought treatment in the Greater Malé region during the past year or have lived in the Malé area continuously for five years.
The Housing Ministry also stated that under the Family Housing Programme of the government’s “Housing for All” policy, the amendment allows persons with disabilities to submit their own applications.
Applications will be accepted through the housing portal at https://boahiyaavahikan.housing.gov.mv from 11:00 hrs on 24 March until 23:59 hrs on 30 April.
The ministry noted that additional documents required for this category are outlined in the official announcement. The amendments are intended to make the process easier and ensure that persons with disabilities are prioritised within the housing allocation system.
For further information, applicants have been advised to contact the ministry through hotline numbers 4004860 to 4004865 or via email at [email protected].
