Ex-President Nasheed meets Gender Minister Dhiyana
While answering a question from Haveeru after meeting President Nasheed at his residence, Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed said the purpose of the meeting is “to discus some things” with Nasheed and refused to divulge details of the discussion at this time. When asked if anything was discussed regarding the arrest of her husband and some other political figures she admitted that some talks were held on the issue as well. Dhiyana revealed the that she had met with Nasheed as he is the leader of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as some senior members of MDP were arrested with Jabir. “My husband was arrested with MDP members. It is now clear to all of us that they were beaten. After the court order to release them it is clear they were arrested illegally. Parliament Speaker, committee on privileges, and counsel general also has recommended so. So I’m concerned that the government is doing things like this,” Dhiyana stressed. Dhiyana revealed that she is now considering seeking compensation and suing the government for her husband’s arrest. She insisted that she would not step down from her post and added that there was no pressure from the government on that thus far. Jabir, Henveiru South constituency MP Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, former opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki and former Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair were among the ten people arrested from the island Haa Dhaal Atoll Hondaidhoo being developed as a resort with drugs and alcohol on Thursday night. However, Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuhfushi Magistrate Court had released all suspects except two when Police presented them to extend their detention period.
