MNU completes first group of MBBS internships

Twenty students from the inaugural batch of MBBS graduates at the Maldives National University (MNU) have completed their medical internships at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
According to IGMH, the internship provided participants with the opportunity to treat patients, respond to emergencies, and gain essential hands-on experience in a hospital setting. The program also allowed the students to apply the medical knowledge and skills they had developed throughout their studies.
The hospital highlighted the guidance and support of consultants, clinicians, and staff as key factors in the successful completion of the program. IGMH stated that the new doctors are now well-prepared to contribute to the Maldivian health sector, helping to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
The medical internship is a one-year program required for graduates to obtain a permanent medical license. Previously, internships were conducted only at Dharumavantha Hospital, which posed several logistical challenges. To address this, the government has expanded internship opportunities to Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) as well.
