Deputy Minister Highlights Potential for Deeper Tourism Engagement Through Cultural, Folklore Promotion

The Maldives has the potential to significantly enhance its thriving tourism sector by actively integrating its rich culture, heritage, and folklore into its offerings, according to the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mohamed Yameen Ahmed.
Speaking at the International Mayors Forum on Tourism held in Zhangzhou, China, Yameen highlighted the immense potential of these unique cultural elements to attract and retain visitors, thereby enriching their overall travel experience.
“Tourism is the lifeblood of the Maldives. The beauty of the Maldives is the strength of this country. So, tourism should be expanded to include our culture, heritage and folklore,” he explained.
Yameen expressed belief that encouraging tourists to explore cultural and historical sites, and immersing them in the nation's traditional stories and practices, will be key to achieving this expansion.
The Deputy Minister also noted the robust and strengthening relationship between China and the Maldives, citing the Sinamale' Bridge, built with Chinese assistance, as a prominent symbol of this close friendship.
He acknowledged China's significant contributions to the development of Maldivian tourism and expressed gratitude for its ongoing support. Yameen conveyed his optimism that the cooperation between the two nations will continue to flourish, propelling the tourism industry to even greater heights.
The International Mayors Forum serves as a vital platform for fostering international collaboration in the tourism sector. On the sidelines of the forum, the Maldives delegation engaged with Chinese mayors and tourism officials, discussing strategies for mutual growth.
The Ministry of Tourism and Environment underscored the significance of such forums, particularly given the Maldives' popularity among Chinese tourists, viewing it as an excellent opportunity to further solidify bilateral tourism ties and drive future advancements in the industry.
