Vice President Mohamed Waheeddeen has said that it takes time to build democracy, and that Maldives should follow China’s example in its efforts to develop democracy.
Waheeddeen made this statement while speaking today at a function held at Traders Hotel to celebrate the 63rd founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
Waheeddeen said that China is headed for a constructive, productive destination through their patient efforts to build democracy, and stressed that democracy cannot be developed in haste.
Waheeddeen expressed felicitations on behalf of the government and the people of Maldives, to the people of China on the occasion of the 63rd founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
He praised the work of the Chinese Embassy in Maldives towards strengthening the relations between the two countries, and noted that the Maldivian government had decided to provide land to build a new Chinese Embassy.
He highlighted that China is, at present, the country from which most number of tourists arrive in the Maldives, and expressed hope that the numbers increase in the future.
Speaking at the function, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Yu Mian said that China is a peace-loving country with an independent foreign policy. He said that China cannot achieve development on its own; similarly, the world also cannot develop without China.
He expressed hope that the relations between the two countries will strengthen over time.
He noted that despite its achievements, China is still a developing country, and highlighted that it is the country will the second highest population in poverty in the world.
The function was attended also by Ministers and State Ministers.
