Supreme Court to give verdict on Nasheed’s conviction on Monday

Supreme Court will be giving its verdict regarding former President Mohamed Nasheed’s 13-year prison conviction on Monday.
Nasheed was found guilty of state terrorism charges on 13 March 2015 over the ‘abduction’ of a judge during his presidency.
Nasheed had been until recently living in the United Kingdom after fleeing his sentence. He returned to Maldives after the Supreme Court suspended his sentence after accepting the Prosecutor General’s request to review his conviction.
Supreme Court will also be starting review hearings regarding the prison convictions of former defense minister Mohamed Nazim and former deputy speaker Ahmed Nazim on Tuesday.
Former minister Nazim was given an 11-year prison sentence after being found guilty of smuggling dangerous weapons while former deputy speaker Nazim was given 12 years on corruption charges.
Both Nazims have been released after the Supreme Court suspended their sentences.
