MDP holds march calling for Nasheed

Main opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held a march in Malé calling for the release of former president Mohamed Nasheed.
The march commenced at 4:00 p.m. from Raalhugandu and was concluded at 6:00 p.m. near Masjid Ibrahim on Sosun Magu, and was attended by some MPs and supporters of MDP.
They called for Nasheed’s release, as recently urged by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Speaking at the event, MP Rozaina Adam said that the purpose of the march was not only to call for Nasheed’s release, but also demand basic human rights for the general public.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) decision regarding the 13-year prison sentence against Nasheed.
The ministry said that the UN cannot make a decision on a case which is going through the legal process of the Maldives, on which the highest court has not yet issued a verdict.
MDP National Council passed a resolution calling for sanctions against Maldives three days ago following the government’s rejection of the UNWGAD’s decision.
