Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s Secretariat confirms the international advocate team of Nasheed will be arriving in Maldives during the first week of coming September.
According to a statement released by ex-President Nasheed’s Secretariat، the business visa confirmation for Nasheed’s advocate team – which consists of UK Lawyer Ben Emmerson، Jared Genser and Amal Clooney – has been given to the office by Department of Immigration and Emigration.
“Attorney General’s Office had spoken with us today، that they had sent request to Controller of Immigration to issue business visa for the international advocate team accepted by the Working Group of UN’s Working Group of Arbitrary Detention، in order for them to arrive and meet with their client، Mohamed Nasheed for the process” says the Secretariat office of the former president.
Earlier in 20th July، Mr. Jared Genser had visited Maldives to meet with Mohamed Nasheed، however he was not permitted with a business visa from Department of Immigration and Emigration and thus had to fly back after shortly arriving in Maldives.
Initially former President’s Secretariat was informed that for acquiring business visa for foreign consultants must be permitted through Supreme Court، however on 5th August the office was informed that such a permission is not required through Supreme Court، but from Attorney General’s Office.
While Nasheed’s international advocate team is expected to arrive in the following month، his case has been sent to High Court for appeal by the state.
Meanwhile، former President Mohamed Nasheed has been transferred from cell arrest to house detention.
