We should disregard Silk Route for the sake of our sovereignty – Nasheed

To preserve the independence and the harmony of our country، we should say no to the China’s proposed 21st Century Maritime Silk Route Project، stated the former President and the President of MDP، Mohamed Nasheed.
Inma tweet he posted on the occasion of Maldives 71st National Day on Tuesday، Mohamed Nasheed said، that we should say no to the Silk Route to elude the harmony of the Indian Ocean and the independence of Maldives going astray.

Although، the former President Nasheed has made the statement، Maldives have already signed the China’s proposed 21st Century Maritime Silk Route Project last week.  Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed signed the Project on behalf of Maldivian Government.
China’s proposed 21st Maritime Silk Route Project is a venture of the Chinese Government to provide security and protection to the business-related vessels travelling from the East to the West .
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said Maldives signed the Project due to the multi-million Dollar infrastructure investments that would benefit to the country from the Project.
Following the acceptance of the Project by the Government، the opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed and MDP had been criticizing the decision and repeatedly demanding to disregard the Project.
