President calls for collective action on food safety and humanitarian responsibility

His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for stronger food safety systems and greater collective commitment across all sectors of society in a message commemorating World Food Safety Day.
In his message, the President highlighted that safe food is fundamental to public health, sustainable development, and human well-being. He noted that foodborne diseases continue to affect millions of people worldwide, placing a significant burden on health systems, livelihoods, and economies, while emphasising that many such illnesses can be prevented through stronger systems, data-driven action, and collective commitment.
The President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring that all food consumed in the Maldives is safe, nutritious, and trustworthy. He noted that, in line with this commitment, the Government is formulating regulations under the Food Safety Act, strengthening border food control measures, and enhancing national technical capacity for food safety monitoring and testing.
Emphasising that national efforts must be supported through broad collaboration, President Dr Muizzu called on food businesses to uphold the highest standards of hygiene and safety, health professionals to strengthen disease detection and response mechanisms, and consumers to remain informed and practise safe food handling at home.
The President also expressed solidarity with communities facing crises and humanitarian emergencies, including Gaza, where unsafe food and contaminated water continue to exacerbate human suffering. On his official X account, he urged the international community to strengthen food safety systems through science, data, and preventive action, stressing that greater cooperation and adherence to internationally recognised standards are essential to reducing the burden of foodborne diseases and building a safer future for all.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also marked World Food Safety Day in a post on her official X account. She underscored that food safety is a shared responsibility involving food businesses, health professionals, and consumers alike, and called for collective efforts to promote safe food practices, protect public health, safeguard communities, and contribute to a healthier future for all.
