Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed all victims of the fire incident that occurred at Maafannu Nirufehige in Male' City on November 10 have been identified.
The fire that broke out on November 10 caused 10 deaths. All the deceased were foreigners and most of them were Indians. With the last body identified, a total of eight Indians died in the incident which are three women and five men. The other two deaths were of a Bangladeshi woman and a man. Meanwhile, an individual who sustained serious injuries in the incident is still being treated at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). He is currently under treatment on a ventilator.
MPS earlier said the bodies of the victims were severely burnt and disfigured beyond recognition. MPS noted the victims were identified based on information received from the public and cross-matches conducted by the police.
Furthermore, MPS is working with relevant authorities as families have requested for the bodies of some of the deceased to be taken back to the country. The police launched an operation in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embassies.
Nirufehi is a two-story building in Maafannu Ward with a garage on the ground floor. Meanwhile, the top floor was partitioned, made into small compartments, and rented out to foreigners. The fire that broke out in Nirufehi caused severe damage to the building and the authorities are working to demolish the building. It is the deadliest fire incident to occur in the Maldives.
