Local councils responsible for services, not oversight: Pres Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that local councils are not meant to hold the government accountable, but to provide essential services to the public.
He made the statement at the official opening of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s new office.
In his remarks, the President emphasised the importance of the upcoming local councils elections scheduled for 4 April, and stressed electing candidates who will support him in fulfilling his presidential pledges and cooperate with the government’s development programmes at island and city levels.
The President noted that the key focus area for 2026 is infrastructure, and that important work will be undertaken in housing, health, education and economic sector. Therefore, elected representatives must assist in achieving development goals, he said.
Noting that local councils are legally responsible for municipal services, the President said the law specifies who is responsible for holding the government accountable. Therefore, electing council members with the intention of holding the government accountable is not the best approach, he stated.
The President highlighted government achievements over the past two years, and said he would outline future plans in the opening session of the Parliament for 2026.
