Gov’t Explores Collaboration on Women Empowerment in Agriculture

Government, on an inter ministerial level, has explored possible collaboration on ways to empower women in the agricultural sector.
The Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham met with the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya along with officials from the Parley Maldives, to discuss opportunities for such a collaboration on Thursday.
According to the Ministry of Social and Family Development, opportunities for collaboration on projects related to women in agriculture and exploring ways to empower women in the agricultural sector were discussed during the meeting.
Discussions were also centered around training on farming techniques using modern equipment and greenhouses, along with ways to roll out such an initiative both financially and administratively, the Ministry said.
In addition to farming, the meeting also focused on promoting local businesses and their produce, it added.
Minister Dr Mariya, has already announced a number of measures to empower women in the agricultural sector, including the establishment of a special fund to assist women entrepreneurs to facilitate modern technology to promote sustainable agriculture along with climate change resilient agricultural training.
In addition, the Minister has also promised more access to farm lands and resources to ensure equal opportunities for women and acceptance of women in the agricultural sector.
