Cause of six-hour blackout in Male’ remains unclear

Neither the State Electric Company (STELCO) nor investigative agencies have yet to disclose the reason for the massive blackout in the Maldivian capital on Sunday, that left the heavily populated city without electricity for nearly six hours.
The power went out in the greater Male’ area, including Male’ City, Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’, at around 12:35 am Sunday, affecting tens of thousands of people living in the densely populated capital. The power was fully restored after nearly six hours at around 06:30 pm.
The massive power outage disrupted public services and trade, and also affected travelers at the Velana International Airport situated in Hulhule’ before backup power kicked in.
The cause of the blackout is being investigated by STELCO, as well as the police and the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).

A spokesperson from STELCO told Sun on Wednesday that the company had finished its investigation, and was compiling a report of the findings.
Information regarding the report will be provided after discussing it with the management, said the spokesperson.
When asked for an update on Thursday, the spokesperson said the management has yet to make a decision.
The police have not responded to queries asking for an update either.
STELCO’s managing director Hassan Fahmy has previously said that the company will disclose the cause of the power outage after its investigation, and will take measures to ensure that such an issue does not occur again.
