At least one dialysis center will be developed in every Atoll by the end of September this year, Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has pledged.
The government has launched several initiatives to strengthen the Maldives’ healthcare sector, and special emphasis has been attached to the establishment of dialysis centres across the country.
In an interview with PSM News, Minister Nazim said under the initiative, the first step is to develop at least one dialysis center in all the Atolls of the country, which he said will be achieved by the end of September this year.
"The service has already been launched in all but a few Atolls. The President has officially launched the service in four Atolls at the World Health Day function. We will expand the service to all Atolls by the end of September,” he explained.
Dialysis services were launched at Velidhoo Health Centre in Noonu Atoll, Muli Regional Hospital in Meemu Atoll, Thaa Atoll Hospital and Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital.
Earlier in February, a similar dialysis centre was established at the Amina Dhiyo Health Centre in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll. A dialysis centre was also established at the Shaviyani Atoll Hospital in 2024.
According to the Ministry of Health, dialysis services are now available in all but five atolls of the country. The service is not currently available in Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Vaavu, Faafu, and Dhaalu Atoll.
The government aims to provide dialysis services in islands where a significant number of patients require the service. The government also aims to further strengthen the health system in the Maldives and provide easy access to services for every citizen to quality health services in their own islands.
