Supreme Court judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir has filed a petition with police seeking a criminal investigation against Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) President Adam Shaamil, accusing him of giving false testimony.
According to a statement from Azmiralda’s legal team, the case follows a letter sent by Shaamil to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), in which he claimed a criminal investigation was ongoing against the judge.
Her lawyers allege that this was false, as no such investigation had been formally initiated by the ACC at the time, amounting to deliberate disinformation.
As such, they are calling for a criminal probe into Shaamil’s conduct, including claims of attempted influence over Judge Azmiralda.
On February 26, the ACC suspended Azmiralda and two other judges from the seven-member Supreme Court bench, just as the court was preparing to hear a petition challenging the recent constitutional amendment that strips MPs of their seats if they leave their parties.
However, the ACC has yet to reveal the specific allegations against the judges, even after a request for details was submitted under the Right to Information Act.
Azmiralda also filed a separate complaint with the ACC last month, accusing Shaamil of abusing his authority and disseminating false information. The commission has accepted that case for investigation.
