Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s leader and Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom urged to hold the party’s primary for the upcoming Local Council Elections as soon as possible.
In a statement, he stated that according to the party’s charter, candidates should be awarded the party’s electoral ticket only after an internal primary. Therefore, the general members and candidates who wish to take part are concerned over the decision to delay PPM’s primary indefinitely, which was announced last Friday.
In addition, Maumoon as the party’s leader condemned the decision, stating that till date the party was running according to its charter and the violation worries its members.
PPM’s adviser and incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom had previously decided to delay the primary without a deadline. However, a new statement was abruptly issued saying that his faction of the divided PPM are working on the candidates to be chosen for the party’s ticket.
