President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally welcomed the inaugural cohort of participants in the newly established Maldives National Service training programme, a flagship initiative aimed at fostering civic responsibility, national resilience, and youth preparedness for roles in public service and security.
The programme commenced this week with the deployment of 343 young men and women to Maafilafushi, Lhaviyani Atoll, where they will begin their training. In a post to social media, President Muizzu revealed that the initiative attracted 1,242 applicants within its first two months, reflecting widespread national interest. The president extended his welcome to the trainees and their families, highlighting the programme’s role in shaping future generations.
Among the selected participants are 279 male and 64 female youths, aged between 16 and 29. Representing 107 islands across the country, the group reflects the administration’s commitment to national inclusivity and demographic breadth.
Originally announced on Victory Day last year, the ‘Dhivehi Vathanee Khidhumaiy’ (Maldives National Service) programme is being implemented under the oversight of the Ministry of Defence. Its objectives are both ideological and practical: to instil a renewed sense of nationalism and Islamic values among Maldivian youth, and to cultivate a generation of responsible, skilled citizens prepared to serve in the country’s security services.
Training modules are designed to develop character and essential life skills. The government aims to nurture individuals who embody unity, moral integrity, respect, and patience, qualities deemed foundational to civic life and national service. Participants are expected to emerge spiritually, mentally, and physically fit, equipped to respond to national emergencies and large-scale disasters.
Selection for the inaugural class was conducted through a nationwide recruitment campaign. Events were held in Malé City, Dhidhdhoo (Haa Alifu Atoll), Kulhudhuffushi City, Funadhoo (Shaviyani Atoll), Manadhoo (Noonu Atoll), Ungoofaaru (Raa Atoll), Mahibadhoo (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll), Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll), Veymandoo (Thaa Atoll), Gan (Laamu Atoll), and Hithadhoo ward of Addu City. Prospective candidates underwent a rigorous evaluation process, including interviews, medical screenings, aptitude assessments, and physical fitness tests.
