All 386 candidates that competed in the 2019 parliamentary election, have been asked to submit their financial records, before May 5.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef noted that the records have to be publicized “as soon as possible.”
While the election was held on April 6, the Commission has asked candidates to submit financial records by May 5, as the 6th of May is the first day of Ramadan and a public holiday.
According to the General Elections Act, “a report relating to the financial matters of the election of the candidate should be prepared and submitted to the Elections Commission within 30 days from the date of election.”

While there are no laws stating that candidates must submit financial statements prior to the election, all 85 candidates of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had done so.
