President Yameen, not international community, is hindering elections: MDP

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Secretary General Anas Abdul Sattar has said that the international community is not attempting to influence the Presidential Election slated for September, rather it is President Abdulla Yameen who is trying to influence the election by controlling the Elections Commission (EC).
Anas said this in a tweet on Tuesday after EC member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that the commission will not allow the international community to interfere with the election.
Although Akram, on a program aired on pro-government Channel 13, said that up until now, the international community has been unsuccessful in their attempts to hinder the Maldivian elections.
In response, Anas in his tweet urged the commission to not allow President Yameen to control the commission.
EC’s President Ahmed Shareef is a close associate of President Yameen and remained a senior official of the ruling party who played a senior role in holding party activities, until his appointment to the post of President of the EC on the 6th of March.
