An envoy from the United Nation’s Political Affairs arrived Tuesday in Maldives, to follow up on the political situation of the archipelago.
UN's Political Affairs had sent a delegation to the island nation last March as well, to find a solution to hold talks between the government and political parties.
The UN stated that on this follow-up visit, the envoy will look into whether the suggestions it had previously made had been implemented.
The delegation will meet with officials of the government and political parties, and civil society representatives during the three-day visit.

The international community has repeatedly called on the Maldivian government to solve the issues in the country through discussions involving the UN as a mediator. The state and opposition parties, however, have not been successful in holding all-party talks to solve the political crisis.
While the government had invited the joint opposition to the talks multiple times, opposition parties refused to participate unless the state met their conditions first, notably releasing their convicted leaders. However, the government asserted that it would not accept any provisos brought in advance to the discussion table.
