Former pres Solih avoids answering on 2028 MDP presidential primary plans

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declined to comment whether he intends on contesting the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s 2028 presidential primary.
Appearing on Raajje TV’s Fala Surukhee Programme on the occasion of MDP’s 20th Anniversary, Solih was asked if he intended to contest the party’s presidential primary. However, he declined to answer, stating that the occasion was not appropriate to address such a question.
“This is not the kind of question to ask while the MDP is celebrating its 20th anniversary and as those who distanced themselves from the party has rejoined the party to work together,” he said.
Solih said MDP should focus on unity and prepare for both the 2027 local council election and the 2028 presidential election, to ensure MDP’s success in both elections.
Although some within MDP have already expressed their intention to contest the presidential primary, Solih called on them to pause their efforts for the time being.
"Those who are interested in the presidential election are already working towards that. However, I think they should postpone their aspirations for now," he said.
Although Solih refused to comment on his mindset for the presidential primary, sources close to him have confirmed that he will contest the primary.
