Manday sentenced to 397 years in prison in longest prison term to date

Criminal Court, on Wednesday, has sentenced Hassan Mamdhooh (Manday), who was found guilty of 94 charges in connection with the fraudulent sale of apartments from K-Park Residences – a condominium under development in Hulhumale’ – to 397 years in prison.
This marks the longest prison term to date in the Maldives.
The 94 charges Manday was found guilty of:
46 counts of misappropriation
44 counts of fraud
3 counts of knowingly providing a counterfeit document to a person to defraud them
1 count of money laundering
Manday’s 397-year prison sentence consists of 368 years for eight years on each misappropriation charge, 14 years for 44 counts of fraud, and 15 years for a money laundering conviction.
Judge Ali Nadheem, who presided over the case, said the crimes committed by Manday warranted harsh punishment due to their execution, adding the punishment should serve as a lesson for others.
Apart from the prison sentence, Manday was also fined by MVR 30 million as part of his money laundering conviction. The Court ordered that the state take possession of the penthouse Manday bought in Hulhumale’.
An acquittance of Manday, Jaishan Saeed has also been convicted of 89 charges. These include 45 counts of participating in misappropriation, 40 counts of fraud, three counts of knowingly providing a counterfeit document to a person to defraud them, and one count of aiding and abetting in money laundering.
The fraudulent sale of the K-Park apartments was submitted for police investigation by both Hanbo – the project’s developer - and HDC.
Manday and Jaishan are accused of doctoring documents by forging the signature of Hanbo’s majority shareholders, and opening an account in the company’s name with the Bank of Maldives (BML) despite the company already having opened its banking account with State Bank of India in order to defraud multiple clients.
The police found that 23 K-Park apartments were sold to over 50 people, with some of the apartments sold to as many as six people.
During the investigation into the case, the police raided an MVR 7.8 million penthouse apartment, which investigators believe was purchased by Manday by selling two apartments from K-Park Residences to four different buyers.

From the penthouse, the police found items worth around MVR 7 million, including 200 unopened perfume bottles, luxury bags, and jewelry.
