The main government hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has announced the first successful birth through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) at the National Fertility Centre of Dharumavantha Hospital.
IGMH said both the newborn and the mother are doing well, and that the birth marks a historic milestone in domestic fertility treatments. The hospital said it is a significant advancement in the hospital’s efforts to provide renewed hope for families seeking reproductive healthcare and fertility treatments within the Maldives.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dharumavantha Hospital, Abdul Razzaq Haleem said the historic success of the first IVF birth at the National Fertility Centre brings hope for families seeking fertility treatments locally. He expressed gratitude to the centre’s team and other hospital departments that assisted the centre for their dedicated efforts.
CEO Haleem further highlighted that previously, families had to travel abroad for IVF services, which was a financial and emotional burden, and welcomed the local availability of this service. He thanked the President for launching this important service and making it available free of charge in the Maldives under the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha.
The National Fertility Centre was officially opened on 15 November 2024, as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s promise to provide domestic fertility treatments. While the centre provides advanced reproductive health services to address infertility issues, an endometriosis and pelvic clinic has also been established at IGMH.
The government views reproductive health care as essential for building strong families and a healthy society.
