President Muizzu Announces Start of Mental Hospital Project in L. Gan This Year

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of the planned Mental Hospital in L. Gan will begin this year, as part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen mental healthcare services in the Maldives.
Delivering his Presidential Address at the first sitting of this year’s People’s Majlis session, President Muizzu stated that all necessary preparations are underway to launch the project in 2024.
In addition to the Mental Hospital in L. Gan, the President confirmed that construction work will also begin on GDh. Gadhdhoo Hospital and Th. Vilufushi Hospital within the year.
President Muizzu emphasized his administration’s commitment to expanding mental health services, highlighting key initiatives such as the launch of the 24-hour National Mental Health Helpline (1677).
Currently, the Mental Health Clinic at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is the only specialized facility for mental health treatment in the Maldives. The new Mental Hospital in L. Gan is expected to enhance access to specialized care and address the growing demand for mental health services.
The government’s focus on mental healthcare expansion reflects its commitment to improving nationwide access to quality medical treatment and ensuring better support for individuals facing mental health challenges.
