Jumhoory Party (JP), Maldives National Party (MNP) and The Democrats have agreed to back a common candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
The announcement was made in a press conference following talks between JP’s leader Qasim Ibrahim, MNP’s leader Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim, and former president Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday afternoon.

“We have a formula to for all of us to produce one candidate for the presidential race,” announced Qasim.
Qasim said he also intends to hold talks with the main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).
He said that JP, MNP and Democrats were in agreement on holding talks with the two parties.

“We all want to back one candidate in the presidential election,” he said.
The political leaders said they hope to see all opposition parties unite against the current administration.
“We will back a candidate that we can all agree on,” he said.
