Male’ City Council has decided to develop all roads in the capital except for the main thoroughfare Majeedhee Magu and ring road Boduthakrufuraanu Magu.
The council plans to develop the roads to provide a long-term fix to the issue of flooding.
Mayor Shifa Mohamed told RaajjeMV that the roads have to be dug up constantly due to the way they are structured and that the only solution is to install pipelines.
She said that a foreign consultancy firm will be arriving in Male’ to provide a durable solution so as to allow authorities to fix issues without having to dig up the roads.
She highlighted that the lack of piping is the reason why roads have to be dug up after flooding and that the consultancy firm will also advise them on whether to tar the roads.
Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef said the previous government has already developed Majeedhee Magu and Boduthakarufaanu Magu but that the other roads have been damaged beyond use.
He said that they will consider an environmentally-friendly approach to developing the roads.
The City Council has also begun removing the dewatering pipes laid on the roads by construction companies.
