It was efforts from all parties in the government coalition that secured a majority in last year’s presidential elections and so all their interests will be upheld, President Ibrahim Solih has said.
President Solih said this while speaking at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally in Keyodhoo island of Vaavu atoll.
Solih said that cohesion within the coalition is imperative and that the ruling parties have much work to do, and many obstacles to face.
MDP’s decision to contest for all but one of 87 seats in the upcoming People’s Majlis election has caused a rift between its coalition partners.
Further speaking a the rally in Keyodhoo island, President Solih said that the newly established SME Bank will begin giving out loans next week.
Establishing an SME Bank, which will facilitate small and medium-sized enterprises, is a pledge in the new government first 100-day agenda.
The local government councils of all cities across the country will each hold a 15 percent stake in the bank, the Economic Ministry has said.
President Solih is visiting two more atolls as part of MDP’s campaign for the upcoming election.
