The first audit reports of Maldives with an independent auditor general was released in 2007. This will be the 10th year since the reports were first released. Signs show that, the courts will not accept cases which are that old now.
Civil Court decided that they will not accept a case of Ameen Construction because they delayed filing the case for 11 years. All cases highlighted by auditor general’s cases are not criminal offences. There are many cases where the state has to get back money lost from the state. Hence, such cases shall be filed at the civil court.
People are worried that, even though it has been 10 years since these reports were published, no action has been taken against it. It is not clear whether the state should receive money or not or whether these cases hold ground or not.
The people of Maldives would like to know whether these cases are real or not. The people are suspecting those who are mentioned in the report because these cases has not been investigated for this long. They can only save themselves from suspicion when a decision is taken regarding the cases.
Now the question is whether these reports will expire or not and if it happens who will take the responsibility for that. So far no government authority decided not to investigate any of these cases. Also, it is not known whether the government abolished any institution that was created to investigate such cases.
Audit reports of 2007 expiring this year ? Who will take responsibility?
