Opening of Parliament will be stymied: Nasheed
Speaking at the ongoing serial protest by his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Nasheed said last night “I will be at the front lines that day” and “if they want to open the Parliament, they will have to shoot me first.” “I assure you that I would come out and do everything possible to prevent the Parliament from being made illegitimate,” said Nasheed according to a statement posted in the MDP website. He further said that to hold Parliament sessions without leading to “utter chaos” was not possible and he would employ every available peaceful measure to prevent the Parliament from slipping away. “Inshah Allah I would join the protest that day” Nasheed stressed. Former President had not participated when MDP had protested and prevented the opening of Parliament on March 1. Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa had also claimed on Thursday, that President Waheed would not be allowed to enter the Parliament chambers to address the assembly on Monday. “However much he claims that he would enter the chambers, he would be prevented from doing so. The Parliament is not the barracks of the bribed military that had been part of the overthrow of the government. That is the chambers of the legislators and no one can enter unless we sanction it. He (Waheed) would be denied that opportunity,” Easa said. Despite claims by Nasheed and some MDP legislators, there have been conflicts of opinion amongst the other members. In that regard MDP vice president and Feydhoo MP Alhan Fahmy has repeatedly stressed that the Parliament must be allowed to reconvene as a peaceful resolution to the present crisis can only be attained through Parliament. Alhan also noted that the constitutional amendments necessary for early presidential polls can also be facilitated by the Parliament. International community including the United Nations and Commonwealth had expressed disappointment and deep concern following the block of the opening session of Parliament on March 1.
