PG's office defends decision to charge 15 year old mother
An official of the PG’s office insisted that the decision to charge the 15 year old with fornication was made after extensive assessment of the case. PG's office had earlier stressed that the 15 year old claimed by the islanders to be sexually molested is being charged with fornication over another case. As the charges filed against the girl have no connection with the buried baby case, PG’s office has no intention so far to withdraw the charges. “So far we have no intention of reversing the decision to charge her at the Juvenile Court,” official said. The baby born last June was found buried in the bath house of the 15 year old’s home. The child delivered out of wedlock was found dead. Charges have been filed against 15 year old’s mother and step-father over the deliberate murder of the baby. The decision of the PG’s office has sparked condemnation and concern from various institutions including the Gender and Human Rights Ministry. The case has also grabbed the attention of some of the international media. While the mother and step-father of the 15 year old are being charged with the deliberate murder of the baby, they are also facing other charges. In this regard, the man is facing charges of possession of pornography and sexually abusing a minor. The mother faces charges of concealing a crime.
