Alice Wells, the acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, is to visit Maldives and Sri Lanka as part of a three-day visit to the region.
Wells, who was placed at the helm of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) last year, is to meet with senior officials of the Maldivian government, the opposition, and civil society organizations.
"She will offer congratulations on the country's successful national elections and convey US interest in expanding bilateral cooperation," the State Department said in a statement dated Monday.
Assistant Secretary Wells will begin her three-day visit on October 9th, until the 11th. Wells was the US Ambassador to Jordon before her removal from the position last year at the request of the country’s sovereign, King Abdulla II.
This year, US President Donald Trump nominated Alaina B. Teplitz as ambassador to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, replacing ambassador Atul Keshap, who has headed the mission in the region since 2015.
