Govt. requested to revoke case submitted to UN Working Group: MDP

Opposition MDP has alleged that the Government had requested the Party to revoke the case submitted by former President Mohamed Nasheed to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
A statement released by the Party on Friday night stated that the Party had abided by the all the conditions the Government set in the course of negotiations between the Party and the Government. The Party stated that the Government had stipulated that the Party could not publicly respond regarding Nasheed’s detention and the case to the UN Working Group. The Party had stated that the Government had requested to revoke the case for Nasheed’s freedom. The Party had also agreed to cooperate with the Government on key Bills and to halt rallies. The statement added that MDP had initially planned to change the age criteria for Presidential candidates to 18 years but had opted to forgo that measure and support the Government. The Party added that they had acted in the same manner when impeaching former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and approving Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb for the Dr. Jameel’s replacement.
The statement said that the Party had fulfilled all the stipulations the Government had set, but the Government is yet to act on their promises. The statement noted that the Party had stipulated for the freedom of political detainees, especially for the freedom of Party President Mohamed Nasheed. There were some rumors that surfaced on Thursday that Nasheed would be freed. However, the statement said that instead of doing that, the Government had appealed Nasheed’s verdict in High Court.
