"Government do not wish the opposition party to be hijacked and expunged"

The spokesperson at the President’s Office، Ibrahim Muaz Ali has stated that it is not the wish of the Government to see the competitive opposition party to be hijacked by outsiders and let it be expunged.
The spokesperson made his statement on Saturday after expressing gratitude on behalf of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to the supporters of the Raa atoll Alifushi by-election candidate.
“On behalf of the Government and President، I thank everyone in this electorate.”
The by-election was won by the ruling party، Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate، Aminath Ali، Cuba of R. Alifushi، with 685 votes against the opposition MDP candidate Ali Hameed، who got 490 votes.
Ibrahim Muaz further said democracy will be depicted by the results of ballots، and the Government wishes to have a competitive opposition party.
However، Muaz added، that the situation today is the ‘certain people had grabbed onto the opposition party، hijacked it، and are slowly destroying the party’s spirity. “This is not something the Government wishes to witness. This is not how the Government wishes to mature the democracy.”
Meanwhile، Jumhooree Party (JP) and Adhaalath Party (AP) had joined with the leading opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).to ‘fight against the brutality’.
