President Muizzu Pledges to Complete Finey’s Harbour Incorporating Residents’ Suggestions

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the harbour project of Finey, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, will be completed with revisions incorporating input from the island’s residents. The President made the remarks while addressing the residents of Finey as part of his ongoing tour of inhabited islands of Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
Earlier in the day, President Muizzu met with the Finey Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions to discuss the island’s most pressing development needs. The meeting was held at the Secretariat of the Finey Island Council.
During the discussions, the Council highlighted several key priorities, including the expansion and modification of the ongoing harbour development project, relocation of the school to enable expansion, facilitation of road upgrades, and the installation of electricity cables in both the tourism zone and newly populated areas. The Council also stressed the need for a new council office building to address administrative challenges and requested the development of a modern futsal ground, as the current turf field is no longer suitable for use.
Addressing the community following the meeting, the President said he was visiting Finey to engage directly with the community to discuss the island’s development and share government plans. Noting that he had made numerous pledges for the island, the President said one of the most pivotal projects for the island was its harbour project. While the project is already being implemented by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), he noted that the residents have proposed numerous revisions to the island’s harbour project. He assured residents that their suggestions would be incorporated into the revised design, with key adjustments included in the 2026 budget.
Outlining further development initiatives for the island, the President recalled that the island’s road development is also a presidential pledge for Finey. He said preparations are underway with the Road Development Corporation (RDC) for the practical implementation of the project, stressing the importance of safe and well-planned roads on an island as large as Finey.
The President also pledged to implement projects in the fields of youth and sports, including a modern futsal field under next year’s budget, as well as a fitness and recreation centre commencing this year. Additionally, an outdoor gym and volleyball court will also be developed in the near future, he said.
On education, the President also said the proposed school relocation project will be budgeted and carried out next year. Noting that the school’s multipurpose hall is located offsite as the existing school facility does not have adequate space, the President said the island’s residents have requested to relocate the school to a larger site.
Further pledges included the establishment of a police station, development of a waste management centre, a children’s park, and energy sector projects. Concluding his address, the President reaffirmed that the administration would continue to prioritise projects that directly improve the quality of life for the people of Finey.
As part of the visit, the practical work on the construction of a police station in Finey was also launched. Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, and the Commissioner of Police, Ismail Naveen, and Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Ahmed Saudi launched the project, alongside Finey Council’s President.
The project was awarded to MTCC, as part of efforts to ensure police presence on all inhabited islands of the Maldives. As per President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy, the government aims to achieve this within two years.
President Muizzu also inaugurated the newly established Bank of Maldives (BML) Automated Teller Machine (ATM) service in Finey. The initiative is part of a government pledge to provide ATM services to all inhabited islands, with BML establishing machines in 100 islands this year.
To mark the occasion, President Muizzu conducted a symbolic withdrawal from the ATM, and a commemorative bank card was presented to the Finey Island Council.
The self-service ATM offers 24-hour access for individuals and businesses, enabling cash withdrawals, deposits, bill payments, and fund transfers, as well as credit card and loan servicing.

The joint initiative between the government and BML has already extended ATM services to all inhabited islands in six atolls: Haa Alifu, Shaviyani, Dhaalu, Noonu, Meemu, and Kaafu. With the inclusion of Finey, the BML network now comprises more than 250 ATMs nationwide. The bank reaffirmed its commitment to delivering convenient banking services in close proximity to communities, in alignment with national development priorities.
