The Maldives has expressed profound concern at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over ongoing attacks on humanitarian aid workers in Palestine and the obstruction of relief efforts in Gaza.
Speaking on behalf of the Maldivian government during verbal proceedings at the ICJ, Attorney General Ahmed Usham reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering support for the Palestinian people and condemned actions that undermine the delivery of critical humanitarian assistance in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Attorney General Usham stated that it is essential to ensure safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid for civilians affected by the ongoing conflict. He also criticized efforts to weaken the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which plays a vital role in supporting Palestinian refugees.
The Maldives joined other nations in condemning the targeting of humanitarian personnel and the obstruction of aid, urging the international community to hold those responsible accountable. The Maldivian delegation, which included several legal experts, argued that the justification of military necessity or national security cannot override obligations under international humanitarian law.
The government reiterated its call for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers and underscored the need for a just and lasting solution to the crisis in Palestine.
Israel has come under fire at the ICJ for violating international law by preventing aid from reaching civilians in Gaza. The hearings, which began Monday (April 28) in The Hague, include statements from UN officials and Palestinian representatives, with participation from dozens of countries.
Since March 2, Israel has completely cut off supplies to Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, and food stockpiled during an earlier ceasefire has nearly run out.
