The Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) has informed students preparing for international study that mandatory academic recognition documentation is available independently and without charge, seeking to clarify that students need not incur "exorbitant fees" through third-party intermediaries.
Officials confirmed that the 'Recognition of the Intended Programme' document, which verifies compliance with the national qualifications framework, has perpetually been a free service accessible via email or at the agency’s offices. The guidance follows reports of students utilising external services and subsequently failing to secure visas, a complication that has prevented them from attending scheduled classes.
As the national student loan programme remains open year-round, the government is moving to streamline the transition to higher education. The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has recently lifted restrictions on educational opportunities within critical technical fields, pledging a minimum of 50 per cent of the annual loan scheme to these disciplines.
Under newly gazetted regulations, the ministry has also eliminated application deadlines, allowing students to seek financial assistance the moment they possess an institutional placement, a fee structure, and the official programme letter from the authority.
By removing the administrative distinction between newly enrolled and continuing students, the government aims to eliminate the procedural confusion that previously led to disqualifications, ensuring funding is available precisely when students are prepared to commence their studies.
