Adhaalath Party’s sitting vice-president, Sheikh Mohamed Shifan, has been elected as the party’s new president with 99 percent of the vote. Sheikh Abdullah Rasheed was elected vice‑president with the same margin.
The election for the party’s top two posts was held online on Saturday from 0900 to 2000 hrs through the Fahivote application.
According to results released by the Adhaalath Party, Shifan and Rasheed secured 99 percent of the votes cast, while their rivals, Dr Ikram Abdul Sattar and his running mate Mohamed Muthalib, received just one percent. The party has not disclosed how many members participated in the vote.
This year’s internal election took place amid disagreements within the party over the voting method. On January 11, Ikram, who contested for the presidency, formally requested that ballot boxes be used. However, the party’s internal election regulations do not permit ballot‑box voting.
Ikram later issued a statement alleging that the election process violated principles of fairness and announced that he would boycott the vote.
Shifan is believed to have contested with the backing of the party’s incumbent president, Imran Abdullah, along with Dr Mohamed Iyaz Abdul Latheef and Sheikh Ilyas Hussain.
