No military threat to Maldives from Middle East conflict, says Defence Minister

Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has said the unrest in the Middle East does not pose a threat to the Maldives at present.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Ghassan said the Maldives has maintained its decision not to allow its airspace or facilities to be used for war purposes, a policy in place since the conflict began.
During the briefing, a reporter asked which countries had requested to use the Maldives’ airspace. Responding to the question, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel said requests from other countries are not disclosed without their consent, citing diplomatic respect.
The government is working to boost the Maldivian army’s ability to protect the country’s sea and airspace. Authorities have emphasised they will not allow any illegal activities within the country.
