Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) mayoral candidate Abdulla Mahzoom Majid has pledged to create a public database documenting all mistakes and misconduct within the Male' City Council, complete with the names of those responsible, if he is elected mayor.
Speaking on SSTV’s Baaru Hathareh programme, Mahzoom said political actors often blame one another and repeatedly invoke the phrase “previous government” to justify failures. He alleged that the current administration also frames its actions as efforts to correct the “thefts” of past governments.
Mahzoom said he intends to break that cycle through a policy rooted in transparency and integrity.
He pledged to take action against any council member or employee who commits wrongdoing.
“Transparency means that if I am given the position of mayor, I will expose any wrongdoing in Male' City Council from the first day I take office. I will put it in an easy‑to‑see database. I will make it visible,” Mahzoom said.
He added that such a system would make it difficult for anyone to defame or unfairly blame him, councillors, or council staff.
Mahzoom announced his candidacy for mayor in late December last year. He has previously argued that Male' City’s biggest challenges stem not from a lack of resources but from weak management caused by corruption.
He described the presidential system as one that has turned political representation into a “market for buying and selling votes,” claiming that corruption influences most decision‑making today. He also alleged that positions and responsibilities are increasingly given to politically connected individuals.
Mahzoom said Male' has become a difficult city to live in due to corruption and slander. He said he is contesting the mayoral election with the aim of reversing those issues and improving the quality of life and business in the capital, adding that Maldivians have the skills needed to achieve that change.
