President Abdullah Yameen has called on United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to send a delegation to the Maldives, in order to ease the political situation of the country.
He made the appeal in a phone call to the Secretary General, while sharing the details of the present political situation in the country. Foreign Ministry reported that Secretary General Ban had accepted the
offer. The Ministry also reported that President Yameen had shared details of the ongoing political discussions with the opposition with Ban. President Yameen had informed Secretary General Ban that opposition MDP had also been given the opportunity to participate in the talks as well.
President Yameen also stated that in Maldives there were no political prisoners. However, he noted that some political figures had earned jail terms following conviction on various crimes.
Foreign Ministry also reported that the two also engaged in discussions regarding the trial of former President Mohamed Nasheed. As such, President Yameen informed Secretary General Ban that
Nasheed’s lawyers had appealed for a reduced sentence and that he had called on the lawyers to complete the legal process.
