Nasheed to sue Criminal Court bench for defamation

Former President Mohamed Nasheed is to file defamation charges against the Judges of the Criminal Court who had overseen his terrorism case and Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdullah Mohamed.
A statement issued on his website stated that Criminal Court had issued many erroneous reports on the proceedings of the case in Criminal Court.
The statement noted that the Court had put forward a document, which the Court stated was based on what Nasheed had said in Court in the first hearing. The statement added that on the second hearing of the case, Nasheed had stated that the document was not based on what he had said in Court and refused to sign it. Additionally, Nasheed had stated that he would sign the document only when the document had been amended.
The statement said that Criminal Court had failed to put forward an amended document. On March 13th, Criminal Court judges had attempted to make Nasheed sign another document. However, the statement noted that Nasheed stated that he would not sign any document, unless his lawyers were present.
Following the verdict of 13 years issued on Nasheed, his lawyers had requested from Criminal Court to issue a report on the entire case. However, the statement said that Criminal Court had refused to issue such a statement citing that they were unable to do so as Nasheed had failed to sign the documents.
The statement noted that, Criminal Court had not made any attempts to compile or get the required signatories. But, on 26th March 2015, Criminal Court had claimed that Nasheed had signed the documents and therefore, the Court would issue a report of the entire case.
The statement noted that this was a blatant lie by the Criminal Court and that Criminal Court had not worked to issue such a report. Therefore, the statement concluded, that Nasheed and his legal team had passed to file a defamation suit in Civil Court against the four persons stated. [source: vnews]
