Former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has called upon the people of Thinadhoo to become defence witnesses for the 89 accused for the Arson case of Thinadhoo on 8th February 2012.
Meeting with the 89 accused in Male’ City Council on Sunday night، President of MDP، Mohamed Nasheed said if the PG Office send the case back to the Criminal Court for re-prosecution، while it has been withdrawn from the court earlier، the option in his opinion is the whole population of Thinadhoo to become defence witnesses for the accused.
“I think the best option is that whole population of Thinadhoo to start their journey to come to Male’ to give their witness statements. It is something I’d call for. I think it is wise if the whole population of Thinadhoo become defence witnesses. We will offer all the help we could.” Nasheed said.

He said that even if it is 300 or 1000، he urge them to present themselves to the court and become defence witnesses for the accused.
Highlighting the difficulties faced by the accused over the accommodation in Male’، Nasheed said that he have asked the help of MDP Chairperson، MDP Women’s Wing، and districts in Male’، to facilitate accommodation for the accused.

Fifty five accused for the arson case was ordered detainment on the allegation of tampering of witnesses. Seventeen more were ordered for detainment as they did not show up for the court proceeding. However، as state lawyer failed to show up for the court proceeding on Saturday، the case was withdrawn، and all the detainees were released.
Total of 89 were accused of the arson on Government buildings in Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo on 8th February 2012، following the resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed on 7th February 2012.
