Government of Maldives has revealed that they were preparing to request for a review of the decision issued by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention regarding former President Mohamed Nasheed’s case. Lead consul for government, Toby Cadman revealed the decision speaking on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu program on Thursdaynight. He said that Government was working to file for a request to review the decision, on the basis that the Group had issued the decision without considering the documents and evidence put forth by the Government.
Cadman stated that the Group’s decision was not a legally binding one for any Government and implementation of any such decision was at the discretion of the said Government. Cadman added that the Government fully respected UN and all its Institutions and will hold themselves accountable to UN.
The Government had previously announced that any decision on the UN Working Group decision will be undertaken only from within the legal framework.
