President Muizzu Announces E-Gates for All International Airports in the Maldives by 2026

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that all international airports across the Maldives will be equipped with E-Gates by 2026, as part of the Government’s broader digital transformation agenda. The update was shared through the President’s official X account, where he highlighted ongoing efforts to install advanced, state-of-the-art E-Gates at the new terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA).
According to the President, ten E-Gates will be installed at each terminal for both arrivals and departures by January 1, 2026. He further confirmed that the service will be expanded to all international airports nationwide within the same year.
The E-Gates will enable passports to be scanned once and verified through facial recognition, significantly reducing waiting times and enhancing the overall border control experience for both Maldivian and foreign travellers.
The new international terminal at VIA, which opened on 26 July 2025 with an annual capacity of 7 million passengers, has already introduced several modern services aligned with the Government’s Maldives 2.0 policy. This initiative aims to prioritise the digitisation of public services and enhance efficiency across the aviation and travel sectors.
