President outlines 30-month timeline for completion of Milandhoo Airport

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that the development of Milandhoo Airport, including land reclamation and harbour development, will be completed within 30 months. He made the announcement while addressing residents of Milandhoo in North Miladhunmadulu Atoll, as part of his ongoing visit to the inhabited islands of the atoll.
The President outlined the scope of the Milandhoo Airport project, one of his key presidential pledges. He stated that the 40-hectare land reclamation works, contracted today, are scheduled for completion within eight months, while the full airport project, including harbour development and relocation, will be finalised and operational within 30 months. He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to enhancing harbour facilities on the island to strengthen economic activity and connectivity.
Several major initiatives pledged during his campaign were launched today. These include the construction of 50 housing units, the commencement of Milandhoo Phase 2 road development, and the establishment of the Milandhoo Sports Complex. The agreement for the second phase of the coastal protection project was also signed during the visit.
In addition, President Dr Muizzu attended groundbreaking ceremonies for the new police station, Islamic centre, and hospital. He also inaugurated the Milandhoo futsal pitch and volleyball court. Passport issuance services were officially launched in Milandhoo today.
The President noted that the new Islamic Centre will be built as a modern facility accommodating up to 700 people, while the new hospital building will feature a 30-bed capacity. The road development project will include a ring road, and revetments will be constructed to expand the island’s land area.
Furthermore, the President announced that the second Public Works Unit in North Miladhunmadulu Atoll will be established in Milandhoo to strengthen infrastructure management and service delivery. He also revealed that WAMCO services will commence in January 2026, while X-ray services will be introduced before the end of this year.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised that today represents a pivotal stepping stone in advancing Milandhoo’s comprehensive and sustainable development.
