President Dr Muizzu highlighted that the media functions as the fourth estate serving as a key link between the branches of state established under the Constitution. He noted the high regard accorded to freedom of expression in Islam, while emphasising that it is accompanied by clear ethical limitations and boundaries. He stated that efforts to develop information ecosystems under the Maldives 2.0 initiative will contribute to cultivating an even more conducive environment for journalists.
Emphasising the importance of strengthening journalism as a profession that supports dignified and sustainable livelihoods, he noted that the Government is working to address structural challenges faced by the media sector, including operational viability in a small population context, while supporting the development of a skilled and academically grounded generation of media professionals, that can keep pace with a rapidly evolving global landscape. He further asserted the current Administration’s unprecedented attention to the press. He affirmed that the pledges made to the media are being fulfilled, sharing details of ongoing Government initiatives aimed at media development.
